half whole diminished scale
- essentially 3 of them
- ambiguous, transitional, suspension
- used as a system of tension
- mostly not on a dimished scale, on a dominant 7 chord with alteration (ex: C713b9#9#11)

C half whole diminished scale:

Db half whole diminished scale:

D half whole diminished scale:

Question: is it better to think about it in terms of:
1. spacing between the notes
2. numbers in the scale
3. just knowing what it sounds like w/o really thinking
I mean 3 is the best? 1 & 2 are a means to an end or a definition?

I feel like a piece of shit learning the same lesson over and over again

learning, forgetting, learning, forgetting

did I truly learn it if I forgot?

I haven’t forgotten my major and minor scales. I don’t think about them in terms of spacing between the notes. I can’t even say out by heart the spacing without reverse engineering it. I just know what it sounds like and can flash the mapping in my brain. #3.

I weirdly really know C half-whole diminished very well because I had to drill it for a piano test one time, but I didn’t practice the other two

Goal: be able to
- see the map of all three at once on the keys

Means to the end:
- drill keyboard map in mind when waiting in line or right before falling asleep

Tritone substitution
C7 chord > Gb

C7 (altered):
1     3  #11    b7   b9     #11   13   1

how do you identify the accidentals? how do you distinguish between a #11 and a b5 in an altered chord?  is it just semantics, not really a functional difference

Gb7:

  1               b7         3          7

FM7:

 1             5  13          3.    5

Gb7:
   1            b7       3      13     9
FM7:
   1       5 13       3     13     9

my brain is burning
